The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the sun and its midmorning, 1 by the moon, which follows it, 2 By the Day as it shows up (the Sun's) glory; 3 and the night as it veils it darkly! 4 And the heaven and Him Who made it, 5 And the earth and Him Who extended it, 6 By the soul, and That which shaped it 7 and inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety, 8 Surely blissful is he who hath cleansed it, 9 And he will indeed fail who corrupts it. 10 Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy, 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 Then Allah's Messenger warned them: “Hands off the she-camel and her drink!” 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
