The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the sun and its noon-time brightness, 1 By the Moon as she follows him; 2 And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness; 3 And [by] the night when it covers it 4 By the heaven and Him Who builded it, 5 The earth and its spreading out, 6 and by the soul and by Him Who perfectly proportioned it, 7 and inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety, 8 He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow, 9 And he fails that corrupts it! 10 Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy, 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 Then the messenger of God said to them, "This is God's she-camel. Let her drink." 13 Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)! 14 He dreadeth not the sequel (of events). 15
