The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 And believed the best matter to be true 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire). 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Indeed, Guidance is Ours, 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 None except the most wicked will enter it. 15 who belied and turned away, 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 And none hath with him any favour for reward, 19 But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High. 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
