The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night enshrouding 1 and the day as it rises bright! 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 That your endeavour is for different ends. 4 Then as for him who giveths and feareth Him. 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 and their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction. 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 So, I warn you of the blazing Fire. 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 who belied and turned away, 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
