The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
READ in the name of thy Sustainer, who has created 1 Created man from a clot. 2 Read and your Lord is Most Honorable, 3 who taught by the Pen, 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay! man is most surely inordinate, 6 for he thinks himself self-sufficient. 7 Verily unto thy Lord is the return. 8 Bethinkest thou him who forbiddeth, 9 A servant when he prays? 10 What will happen if the praying person is rightly guided 11 He would enjoin piety, so how good it would be! 12 Have you considered if he gives the lie to the truth and turns (his) back? 13 Is he then unaware that Allah seeth? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 his lying, sinful forelock. 16 Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades): 17 We too shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 No, indeed; do not obey him! Prostrate and come nearer (to Allah). ۩ 19
