The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read! In the name of your Lord, who created: 1 He created man from a clot of blood. 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One 3 Who taught by the pen, 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 Nay, surely man transgresses; 6 because he thinks that he is independent. 7 Surely unto thy Lord is the Returning. 8 Did you see him who forbids 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 What will happen if the praying person is rightly guided 11 or enjoins true piety? 12 Do you see how he has denied the truth and turned away from it? 13 Does he not know that God sees? 14 Let him beware! If he does not desist, We will drag him by the forelock -- 15 The lying, sinful forelock - 16 So let him now call his gang! 17 We too shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah). ۩ 19
