The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 And his wife and his brother 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 except those that pray 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
