a good many of olden times, 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 “We have been penalised; 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
