The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 the giving of food upon the day of hunger 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
