He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 But the self-sufficient, 5 you attended to him, 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 And to him who came to you eagerly 8 and who has fear of God, 9 of him you were unmindful. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 Let him who will, pay heed to it. 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 [borne] by the hands of messengers 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he. 17 From what did He create him? 18 From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him, 19 He makes his path easy for him. 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 By no means he performed not that which He had commanded him. 23 Then let mankind look at his food - 24 [how it is] that We pour down water, pouring it down abundantly; 25 and then We cleaved the earth asunder. 26 And We made corn grow, 27 together with grapes and vegetables, 28 and olives and palms, 29 and dense orchards, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 Then when cometh the Deafening Cry 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 but some faces will be covered with dust 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
