THUS, INDEED, have We sent Moses with Our messages unto Pharaoh and his great ones; and he said: "Behold, I am an apostle of the Sustainer of all the worlds!" 46 But when he brought to them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 They said, "Sorcerer, call on your Lord for us, by virtue of His pledge to you: we shall certainly accept guidance," 49 Yet no sooner did We take away the affliction from them than they broke their pledge. 50 And Firon proclaimed amongst his people: O my people! is not the kingdom of Egypt mine? And these rivers flow beneath me; do you not then see? 51 “Or that I am better than him, for he is lowly – and he does not seem to talk plainly.” 52 Why were then no bracelets of gold shed upon him from above, or angels sent down as a retinue with him?" 53 Thus he incited his people to levity, and they obeyed him: for, behold, they were people depraved! 54 So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one. 55 And We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages. 56
