The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 “And I do not ask from you any fee for it; my reward is only upon the Lord Of The Creation.” 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
