Samood gave the lie to the apostles 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism), my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 Within gardens and springs 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
