The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
