The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the star when it setteth. 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 that [which he conveys to you] is but [a divine] inspiration with which he is being inspired 4 taught by One who is Stern in power. 5 Dhu Mirrah (free from any defect in body and mind), Fastawa [then he (Jibrael - Gabriel) rose and became stable]. [Tafsir At-Tabari]. 6 being on the higher horizon, 7 and then drew near, and came close, 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 Thus He revealed unto His bondman whatsoever He revealed. 10 His heart did not lie of what he saw. 11 will you, then, contend with him as to what he saw? 12 And indeed, he saw him a second time 13 Near Sidrat-ul-Muntaha [lote-tree of the utmost boundary (beyond which none can pass)], 14 close to the Garden of Refuge. 15 when there covered the Lote-Tree that which covered; 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 Indeed he (Muhammad SAW) did see, of the Greatest Signs, of his Lord (Allah). 18 Have you really considered al-Lat and al-"Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the other? 20 What! unto you the males and unto Him the females? 21 This is certainly an unjust apportioning. 22 These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but empty names which you have invented - you and your forefathers - [and] for which God has bestowed no warrant from on high. They [who worship them] follow nothing but surmise and their own wishful thinking - although right guidance has now indeed come unto them from their Sustainer. 23 Shall man have whatsoever he wisheth for! 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
