۞ Have you not seen the hypocrites who say to their disbelieving brothers among the People of the Book, "If you are driven out, we shall, also, leave the town with you and we shall never obey whoever seeks to harm you. If you are attacked, we shall help you." God testifies that they are liars. 11 If those are expelled, they will not go forth with them, and if they are fought against, they will not help them. Even if they helped them, they would surely turn their backs, then they would not be helped. 12 You [believers] are more fearful within their breasts than Allah. That is because they are a people who do not understand. 13 They fight not against you even together, except in fortified townships, or from behind walls. Their enmity among themselves is very great. You would think they were united, but their hearts are divided, that is because they are a people who understand not. 14 They are like those who, a short time before, suffered the consequences of their deeds. They, too, will suffer a painful torment. 15 [The hypocrites are] like the example of Satan when he says to man, "Disbelieve." But when he disbelieves, he says, "Indeed, I am disassociated from you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds." 16 In the end both will be in the Fire, and will abide in it. That is the recompense of the wrong-doers. 17
