The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 except those who are steadfast 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
