The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 Upon the disbelievers the punishment that none can avert. 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 stripping away his skin, 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Save worshippers. 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 who guard their privates 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
