The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
