He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ HE FROWNED and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or become reminded so that the reminder should profit him? 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 Unto him thou payest regard. 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 you pay no heed to him. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 In honored books, 13 Exalted, pure. 14 borne by the hands of scribes, 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 Be cursed (the disbelieving) man! How ungrateful he is! 17 From what thing did He create him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 and made the path of guidance easy for him to follow. 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 By no means he performed not that which He had commanded him. 23 Then let man look to his food, 24 That We pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 We make the grain grow out of it, 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 and olives and palms, 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 (To be) a provision and benefit for you and your cattle. 32 Then, when there comes As-Sakhkhah (the Day of Resurrection's second blowing of Trumpet), 33 on that Day each person will flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 On that day, each one has just one issue, which is enough for him. 37 Some faces on that day shall shine 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news; 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 and covered by darkness. 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
