He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 Or that he may accept advice, so the advice may benefit him. 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and who has fear of God, 9 you pay him no heed. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 In honoured pages, 13 exalted, purified, 14 Written by the hands of emissaries. 15 noble, pious. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 From what stuff hath He created him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm! He creates and proportions him, 19 He makes his path easy for him. 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 Then when He pleases, He will bring him back to life. 22 No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him. 23 Then let man look at his food, (and how We provide it): 24 It is We Who pour forth water, pouring, 25 and let the earth to break open 26 We make the grain grow out of it, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 thickly planted gardens, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 Each man will have enough cares that day. 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 And many a face will be covered with dust on that day. 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
