He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what could tell you that per chance he might become pure (from sins)? 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 You pay full attention, 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 And as for him who cometh unto thee running, 8 And he fears, 9 you ignore him. 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 So let whosoever will pay heed to it, 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble and most virtuous. 16 May man be slain – how ungrateful he is! 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 Then (as for) the way-- He has made it easy (for him) 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 then, when He wills, He raises him. 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 and vines, and reeds, 28 And olives and date palms, 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 and his mother and his father; 35 and his consort and his children; 36 Each man will have enough cares that day. 37 (Many) faces on that day shall be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them, 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 these, these will be the ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity! 42
