Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 and the ten nights, 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 And by the Night when it passeth away;- 4 is there not in this strong evidence for a man of sense? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 and with the Thamud, who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley, 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 No! But you show no good to the orphan, 17 and you do not urge one another to feed the needy, 18 And you eat away the heritage, devouring (everything) indiscriminately, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be? 23 He will say, "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life!" 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 O soul that art at rest! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! 29 And enter thou My Garden. 30
