The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nay, I swear by this city - 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
