The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
