The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 the believers who cooperate with others in patience (steadfastness) and kindness. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
