The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read (Prophet Muhammad) in the Name of your Lord who created, 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Recite! Your Lord is the most Honorable One, 3 who taught by the pen, 4 taught man what he did not know! 5 Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening 6 Because he sees himself free from want. 7 Lo! unto thy Lord is the return. 8 Have you seen him who restrains 9 A votary when he (turns) to pray? 10 Do you think he is rightly guided, 11 or if he commands others to maintain piety!? 12 Do you see how he has denied the truth and turned away from it? 13 Knoweth he not that Allah doth see? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 The lying, sinful forelock - 16 and then let him summon [to his aid] the counsels of his own [spurious] wisdom, 17 We too would summon the braves of the army. 18 Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). ۩ 19
Allah Almighty has spoken the truth.
