AND, INDEED, [a time came when] We thus inspired Moses: "Go forth with My servants by night, and strike out for them a dry path through the sea; [and] fear not of being overtaken, and dread not [the sea]." 77 Pharaoh pursued them with his hosts, but they were submerged by the sea, which was destined to overwhelm them. 78 For Pharaoh had misled his nation, and did not guide them. 79 O Children of Israel, We delivered you from your enemy, and We made an appointment with you at the right side of the mount, and We sent down to you manna and quails, 80 "Eat from the wholesome things with which We have provided you but do not transgress, lest you should incur My wrath." [We said], "He that incurs My wrath shall surely be ruined. 81 Yet I am All-forgiving to him who repents and believes, and does righteousness, and at last is guided.' 82 ۞ [When Moses was upon the Mount, God said,] "O Moses, why have you come with such haste from your people?" 83 He said: They are here on my track and I hastened on to Thee, my Lord, that Thou mightest be pleased. 84 The Lord said, "We tested your people after you left them and the Samiri made them go astray." 85 Then Moses went back unto his folk, angry and sad. He said: O my people! Hath not your Lord promised you a fair promise? Did the time appointed then appear too long for you, or did ye wish that wrath from your Lord should come upon you, that ye broke tryst with me? 86 They replied: 'We have not failed in our promise to you through our choosing. We were laden with fardels, even the ornaments of the nation, and threw them just as the Samaritan had thrown them (into the fire), 87 "Then he brought out (of the fire) before the (people) the image of a calf: It seemed to low: so they said: This is your god, and the god of Moses, but (Moses) has forgotten!" 88 What? Did they not see that thing returned no speech unto them, neither had any power to hurt or profit them? 89
