۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 when he said unto his father and his people, "What are these images to which you are so intensely devoted?" 52 They replied, "We found our fathers worshipping them." 53 He said: "Certainly you and your fathers have all been in manifest error." 54 They exclaimed, "Have you brought the Truth or are you joking?" 55 He said, "Your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. It was He who created them and I testify to this fact". 56 By the Lord, I will devise a plan against your deities after you have gone away and turned your backs!" 57 Then he made them fragments, all except the big one of them, that haply unto it they may return. 58 They asked (on return): "Who has done this to our gods? He is surely a mischief-monger." 59 They said: "We heard a young man talking (against) them who is called Ibrahim (Abraham)." 60 [The others] said: "Then bring him before the peoples eyes, so that they might bear witness [against him]!" 61 They asked, "Abraham, did you do this to our idols?" 62 He said: But this, their chief hath done it. So question them, if they can speak. 63 So they returned one to another, and they said, 'Surely it is you who are the evildoers.' 64 Then they turned to themselves (their first thought and said): "Indeed you [Ibrahim (Abraham)] know well that these (idols) speak not!" 65 He said: worship ye, then, beside Allah, that which profiteth you not at all, nor it hurteth you? 66 Fie on you and on what you serve besides Allah; what! do you not then understand? 67 They said: "Burn him, and save your gods, if you are men of action." 68 We said: O fire, be coolness and peace for Abraham, 69 And they intended to do him an evil, but We made them the worst losers. 70 We saved him and Lot, and brought them to the land which We had blessed for all the worlds. 71 And We bestowed on him Isaac, and Jacob as an additional gift, and made them righteous. 72 And We made them leaders who guide by Our command, and We sent them the divine revelation to do good deeds and to keep the prayer established and to give charity; and they used to worship Us. 73 To Lot We gave knowledge and wisdom and saved him from the people of the town who were committing indecent acts. They were certainly a bad and sinful people. 74 We encompassed him in Our mercy; he was a righteous man. 75
