The Thamud tribe denied the Noble Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 159
