We sent Moses with Our signs to the Pharaoh and his nobles. He said: "I have been sent by the Lord of all the worlds." 46 But as soon as he came before them with Our [miraculous] signs, lo! they derided them, 47 although each sign that We showed them was weightier than the preceding one: and [each time] We took them to task through suffering, so that they might return [to Us]. 48 And they said: magician! supplicate thy Lord for us for that which He hath covenanted with thee; verily we shall let ourselves be guided. 49 Yet no sooner did We take away the affliction from them than they broke their pledge. 50 And Fir'awn proclaimed among his people, saying: O my people! is not mine the dominion of Misr and witness yonder rivers flowing underneath me? See ye not? 51 I am surely better than this fellow, who is despicable and can hardly make (his meaning) plain! 52 "Why then are not golden bracelets bestowed on him, or angels sent along with him?" 53 So he incited his people to levity and they obeyed him: surely they were a transgressing people. 54 And when they angered Us, We took vengeance on them and drowned all of them, 55 And We made them a precedent and an ensample unto those after. 56
