Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the luminious Book. 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 Whereon every wise command is made clear 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? 14 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' 15 On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
