Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29
