The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER this unfolding [of God's message,] as it comes down from on high! 1 Your companion did not err, nor did he go astray. 2 nor does he speak out of desire. 3 This is only revelation communicated, 4 something that a very mighty one has imparted to him: 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he approached and came closer, 8 until he was two bow-lengths away or even closer 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. 11 will you, then, contend with him as to what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him in another descent 13 By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary, 14 Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! 17 Certainly he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have ye thought upon Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 Shall you have the male issues, and He the female issues? 21 This is an unfair distinction! 22 They are naught but names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allah has not sent for them any authority. They follow naught but conjecture and the low desires which (their) souls incline to; and certainly the guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
