Al-Waaqe'ah 2 of 3
a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
