O you who have wrapped up in your garments! 1 Keep watch all the night except some, 2 A half thereof, or abate a little thereof 3 Or increase a little upon it, and recite the Qur’an slowly in stages. 4 Verily We! anon We shall cast upon thee a weighty word. 5 Surely the rising by night is the firmest way to tread and the best corrective of speech. 6 You are indeed much occupied during the day with the affairs of the world. 7 Remember the name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him wholeheartedly. 8 Lord of the east and the west! No God is there but He! Wherefore take Him for thy trustee. 9 Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely. 10 And leave Me (alone to deal with) those in possession of the good things of life, who (yet) deny the Truth; and bear with them for a little while. 11 Indeed We have heavy fetters and a blazing fire. 12 And food that chokes, and a painful punishment. 13 (They will come across all this) on the Day when the earth and the mountains shall tremble violently and the mountains shall crumble into heaps of scattered sand. 14 Verily We! We have sent unto you an apostle, a witness over you, even as We sent unto Fir'awn an apostle. 15 But Fir'aun (Pharaoh) disobeyed the Messenger [Musa (Moses)], so We seized him with a severe punishment. 16 If therefore you disbelieve, how will you guard yourselves against a day that shall make the children grey-headed? 17 And the heaven shall be split therein. His promise indeed must be fulfilled. 18 This is indeed an advice; so whoever wishes may take the path towards his Lord. 19
