The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 arise and give warning! 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 purify your garments; 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 So that is a tough day. 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 But may he be cursed how he plotted; 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 Then he thought; 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 Then he turned back and was big with pride, 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- 28 it scorches the skin; 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
