He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 And what would make you know that he would purify himself, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself. 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and fearfully, 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 On honoured leaves 13 Exalted and purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 Perish Man! How unthankful he is! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 Then He makes the Path easy for him; 20 Then causeth him to die, and burieth him; 21 then, when He wills, He raises him. 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 to yield therein corn, 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 and fruits and herbage, 31 for you and for your animals to enjoy. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 That Day shall a man flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them, 40 Veiled in darkness, 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
