Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 And the ten nights, 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 And the night when it departs. 4 There surely is an oath for thinking man. 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 led rebellious lives, 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But when He tests him by restricting his provision, he says: 'My Lord has humiliated me' 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 (It will be said to the pious): "O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
