Dawn (Al-Fajr)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the Dawn, 1 and ten nights, 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 Indeed nothing is hidden from the sight of your Lord. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 And when He proveth him, and so stinteth unto him his provision, he saith: 'my Lord hath despised me. 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 And you love wealth with much love! 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 But on that day shall no one chastise with (anything like) His chastisement, 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 Join My worshipers and 29 And come into My Paradise! 30
