Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the Dawn 1 And [by] ten nights 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 the like of whom no nation was ever created in the lands of the world? 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 And increased therein the corruption. 12 Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 and you do not urge one another to feed the needy, 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 Serene soul, 27 Return to your Lord well-pleased (with your blissful destination), well-pleasing (to your Lord). 28 "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
