The Town (Al-Balad)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
