The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Recite: In the Name of thy Lord who created, 1 Hath created man from a clot! 2 Recite: and your Lord is Most Generous, 3 Who taught by the pen, 4 Has taught man that which he knew not. 5 Indeed, surely the human is very insolent 6 for he believes himself to be self-sufficient. 7 Lo! unto thy Lord is the return. 8 Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth 9 a servant when he prays -- 10 What thinkest thou? If he were upon guidance 11 or enjoins true piety? 12 Have you thought that if he denies and turns away, 13 does he not know that Allah sees? 14 Let him beware! If he does not desist, We will drag him by the forelock -- 15 his lying sinful forelock. 16 and then let him summon [to his aid] the counsels of his own [spurious] wisdom, 17 We shall call the guards of Hell. 18 Nay, pay thou no heed to him, but prostrate thyself [before God] and draw close [unto Him]! ۩ 19
True are the words of God the Almighty.
