The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 And We see it nigh. 7 [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 But not so the worshippers 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 who guard their privates 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
