The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 Your companion did not err, nor did he go astray. 2 Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. 3 It [the Quran] is nothing but revelation sent down to him. 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 One strong of make. Then he stood straight. 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 Indeed he saw him a second time, 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 Near it is the Garden of Refuge - 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 That is indeed an unfair division! 22 These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but empty names which you have invented - you and your forefathers - [and] for which God has bestowed no warrant from on high. They [who worship them] follow nothing but surmise and their own wishful thinking - although right guidance has now indeed come unto them from their Sustainer. 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
