The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Arise and warn! 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 And all defilement shun! 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 that shall be a Harsh Day 9 for the unbelievers not easy. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications. 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Verily he considered, and devised. 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 I will soon fling him into hell. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
