The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Read in the name of your Lord Who created. 1 Created man from a clot. 2 Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous, 3 Who teacheth by the pen, 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all). 8 Have you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) seen him (i.e. Abu Jahl) who prevents, 9 a worshipper from praying? 10 Have you seen if he was upon guidance 11 or if he commands others to maintain piety!? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Does he not know that Allah sees? 14 No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock - 15 By the lying, the sinful forelock. 16 Then, let him call his assembly, 17 We will now call the guards! 18 No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah]. ۩ 19
