He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 For him who does not care, 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 though it is not thy concern, if he does not cleanse himself. 7 And for him who came to you striving, 8 and fearfully, 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 Indeed, this [Quran] is an admonition. 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 (It is) in Records held (greatly) in honour (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz). 13 lofty and pure, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 noble and most virtuous. 16 Woe to man! How ungrateful he is! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 Then (as for) the way-- He has made it easy (for him) 20 Then He causes him to die, and puts him in his grave; 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Thereafter We cleave the earth in clefts, 26 And We made corn grow, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 And the olive and the palm, 29 And thick gardens, 30 fruits, and grass. 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 That Day shall a man flee from his brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings. 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 with darkness overspread: 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
