He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 when the blind came to him. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 you attended to him, 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 but as for one who comes to you, eagerly 8 and in awe [of God] 9 You neglect. 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 So let whosoever will pay heed to it, 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 [borne] by the hands of messengers 15 Noble and righteous. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 From what thing did He create him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 Then (as for) the way-- He has made it easy (for him) 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 Then He will raise him up again when He please. 22 No indeed! Man has not accomplished His bidding. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 It is We Who pour forth water, pouring, 25 Then We cleave the earth, cleaving (it) asunder, 26 Thereby produced grain in it. 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 And the olive and the palm, 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 And fruit and grass - 31 (To be) a provision and benefit for you and your cattle. 32 Then when cometh the Deafening Cry 33 it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 on that Day every man among them will have enough concern of his own -- 37 Some faces on that day will be radiant, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity. 42
