He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 But what could tell you that per chance he might become pure (from sins)? 3 Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him? 4 As for him who regardeth himself self-sufficient 5 you attend to him, 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 and in awe [of God] 9 you ignore him. 10 These verses are a reminder 11 and whosoever wills, shall remember it. 12 (It is) in Records held (greatly) in honour (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz). 13 Exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Noble and pious. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 From what thing did He create him? 18 From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 then causes him to die and buries him, 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands. 23 Let Man consider his nourishment. 24 how We pour down rain in abundance, 25 and let the earth to break open 26 to yield therein corn, 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 olives, dates, 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 on a Day when everyone will [want to] flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 and from his spouse and his children: 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 Some faces on that day shall shine 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news; 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
